✨ 8 Free Things You Can Ask Your Cabin Steward For

( and yes…most people never do )

I didn’t realise this until halfway through my first cruise…
I thought our cabin steward just cleaned the room and left fresh towels 😅
But it turns out there are a bunch of small things they’ll happily do for you — you just have to ask.
And if you don’t know, you miss out (which I definitely did at first).
Once I figured this out, it honestly made the whole experience feel smoother and way more comfortable.
So if you’ve got a cruise coming up, this is worth knowing before you step onboard 👇

🧊 Ice Bucket Refilled AnytimeSmall tweak: Just ask for regular refills
→ Perfect for drinks in your cabin without trekking to the bar
🛏 Extra Pillows or BlanketsSmall tweak: Ask on day one
→ Makes your cabin way more comfortable (especially if you’re picky about sleep)
🧼 Extra TowelsSmall tweak: Request a couple more than standard
→ So helpful after the pool, excursions, or quick showers
🔌 Extension Cord (Non-Surge)Small tweak: Ask early—they’re limited ⭐️→ Cruise cabins never have enough outlets
This was the one that made the biggest difference for me… I didn’t realise how annoying the lack of outlets would be until I was there. I just asked my cabin steward for an extension cord and it completely sorted it.
🧊 Mini Fridge Emptied (if stocked)Small tweak: Ask them to clear it
→ Gives you space for your own drinks/snacks
🧹 Extra Cabin Cleaning / Turn Down TimingSmall tweak: Ask for a time that suits you
→ No more awkward “they’re cleaning when I need the room” moments
☕ Extra Coffee / Tea SuppliesSmall tweak: Ask for more than the standard
→ Saves you leaving the room first thing in the morning
🍽 Plates, Cutlery or GlassesSmall tweak: Ask if you’re bringing food back to the cabin
→ Makes casual meals/snacks way easier

Honestly, once I realised you can just ask for these, it made the whole experience feel so much easier. Your cabin steward is there to help—you just have to know what’s worth asking for 😉🛳️ Not every cruise line offers everything, but:
👉 90% of these are standard requests
👉 The key message = you’re allowed to ask

Make it even better✨

A few things I bring to make my cabin feel even better……

🚫 Cruise Items You Might Want to Rethink Packing

(These rules can vary by cruise line, but these are the ones catching people out right now…)

Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before My First Cruise

When I went on my first cruise, I packed like I was moving abroad for six months 😂 I brought far too many clothes, bulky shoes I never wore, full-size toiletries, and about twelve “just in case” outfits. Meanwhile, the things I actually needed were the simple little comforts — a lightweight tote bag, comfy sandals, a refillable water bottle, and a few easy mix-and-match outfits that didn’t wrinkle the second I unpacked them. I also completely underestimated how windy cruise decks are… let’s just say my glamorous floppy hat had a brief career at sea.The funny thing is, after a couple of days onboard, I noticed the experienced cruisers all seemed to do the same thing: pack lighter and keep things simple. Nobody cared if you repeated outfits, and honestly, the less stuff I had cluttering the cabin, the more relaxed the whole trip felt. Now I pack for cruises completely differently — smarter, lighter, and way less stressed. And somehow the trips feel even more luxurious because of it ✨

Cruise Packing Mistakes To Avoid

Cruise packing sounds simple… until you actually step inside your cabin 😅
Most first-time cruisers pack the obvious things — clothes, toiletries, shoes — but it’s usually the SMALL cruise mistakes that end up causing the biggest stress once you’re onboard.
From forgotten medications to overpacked luggage and cabin surprises nobody warns you about, these tiny cruise prep habits can make your trip feel either smooth and relaxing… or frustrating from day one 🚢
Here are the cruise packing mistakes experienced travelers ALWAYS try to avoid before sailing.

Cruise Packing Mistakes List

🚢 1. Packing Too Many “Just In Case” Outfits
Cruise cabins are much smaller than most people expect. Overpacked suitcases quickly become stressful and cluttered.
💊 2. Forgetting to Order Medication Early
Travel delays happen. Experienced travelers refill prescriptions well before departure instead of leaving it until the last minute.
🔌 3. Forgetting a Cruise-Friendly Power Adapter
Cruise cabins often have very limited outlets. A compact cruise-approved adapter or USB hub makes a huge difference.
🧳 4. Not Packing Essentials in Carry-On Bags
If luggage arrives late to your cabin, you’ll want medications, swimwear, chargers, and a change of clothes easily accessible.
🧲 5. Ignoring Cabin Storage Tricks
Magnetic hooks and small organizers are cruise lifesavers for keeping tiny cabins tidy and stress-free.
👟 6. Bringing the Wrong Shoes
Cruises involve FAR more walking than many people expect — especially on excursions and river cruises.
☀️ 7. Forgetting a Small Day Bag
A lightweight day bag becomes essential for excursions, sunscreen, water bottles, travel documents, and sightseeing.
🧥 8. Not Packing Layers
Cruise weather changes fast — especially mornings, evenings, and windy deck areas.
🏷️ 9. Leaving Luggage Unmarked
Adding a ribbon, bright tag, or unique luggage strap makes spotting your suitcase dramatically easier.
📄 10. Relying Only on Digital Documents
Phones die. Wi-Fi fails. Printed cruise documents still save stress surprisingly often.

The best cruises usually start with the smallest preparation habits ✨
Most experienced cruisers aren’t necessarily better travelers — they’ve just learned which tiny details make life onboard feel smoother, calmer, and far less stressful.
A little smart preparation before you sail can make your entire trip feel more relaxing from day one 🚢

I Wish I Knew That!
You Can Often Explore A Cruise Port Without A Tour

When your cruise ship arrives in port, booking an organised excursion isn't always your only option. At some destinations, you can simply walk into town, use local transport or take a taxi and explore independently. It can give you more flexibility to decide what you want to see, where you want to stop for lunch or coffee, and how long you'd like to stay. It can also be a more economical option when you don't need a full organised tour.

The important thing is to do a little homework first. Check how far the port is from the places you want to visit, look at local transport options and, most importantly, know exactly when you need to be back on board. If the port is close to town and easy to navigate, going independently can be a fantastic way to enjoy a day ashore at your own pace. For more complicated ports, an organised tour may provide useful reassurance and transport. 🚢
